The FC Westchester ’91 Boys have won the U17 Championship of the prestigious Disney Showcase, held Christmas week in Orlando.
The ’91s took the adidas Predator championship game vs. TSC Texans in penalty kicks after tying the game 1-1 late in regulation on a goal by Aaron Markowitz, who was the age group’ s leading scorer during the event. The ’91s got to the finals via a 3-0 win over the defending Illinois state champ Chicago Sockers.
In bracket play, the ’91s clinched the top spot with a 2-0 win over Javanon FC, the defending Kentucky state champions. The ’91s -- defending Eastern New York state champs -- finished bracket play at Disney with three wins and no losses, giving up only one goal along the way. Earlier in the tournament, the FCW sqaud got a 4-0 win vs. Team Ohio, the Ohio state champion and a 3-1 win over Fort Collins Arsenal, the defending Colorado state champion.
In Disney’s U16 age group, the FC Westchester ’92 Boys wound up in a three-way tie for first in bracket play, but did not go through to the semis as a result of a goal differential tie-breaker. The ’92s went through bracket play with two wins and one loss, getting a 1-0 over Kirkwood, the defending Delaware state champion, and a 3-1 win over Brevard FC, the Florida state cup semifinalist which wound winning the championship in the age group.
The club had a terrific tournament, going 7-1 overall at this very, very prestigious tournament; that is quite an accomplishment," said club president Lonny Unger. "And for the ’91s to win the championship in their age group is just outstanding."
