In 1987 Coach Al Pastore of the U14 Pelham Travel team and Westchester Select Program saw the future of youth soccer in the United States as elite players playing in premier leagues. As the head coach of the Westchester Select Program he was aware of the opportunity to unite the pool of talented players for a super team that could compete internationally and domestically at the highest levels of youth soccer . He decided to form his own premier team, called FC Westchester.
FC Westchester was officially established as a single team club in 1988 -- though Coach Pastore dates the formation to the team earlier in 1984 as the birth of the club -- to bring the most talented and dedicated soccer players to one team. The first age group was known as the 1973 age group, the founding members of FC Westchester. In 1988 FC Westchester traveled to Europe for competitions in two international tournaments located in France and Italy. The Plougivin International tournament in France featured teams such as Sporting de Lisbon, Brest Armourique, PSG and South Hampton. FC Westchester finished a disappointing 11th place, but Dwayne Roberts was named the Best GK of the tournament. The second European tournament that FC Westchester competed was held in C’esenatico, Italy. The Italian tour featured a clinic at the Serie A professional club, of Torino. FC Westchester was able to capture the championship in the tournament defeating three Italian teams on the road to the title. After one year, of training and international competition FC Westchester ‘73’s where ready for domestic action in the NY State Cup and the best national tournaments.
In 1989 and 1990 the results reflect a team that set the standard and formed a winning tradition for the future teams of FC Westchester. This team established the moniker of “work ethic second to none” The team had great success and it inspired a new generation of FC Westchester players and teams to write their own history of success.
