FCW President Lonny Unger Inducted Into the Westchester Youth Soccer Hall of Fame

FC Westchester president Lonny Unger has been inducted into the Westchester Youth Soccer Hall of Fame.
Unger-- who has been involved in youth soccer dating back to the early 1980s as a coach, administrator and referee --has been president of FC Westchester for more than a decade. Previously, he coached and was president of the New Rochelle Youth Soccer club and has also been a collegiate and ODP coach, in addition to serving on the boards of the Westchester Youth Soccer League and the Eastern NY Youth Soccer Association.
FCW Teams Off to Good Start of 2011-12 Season

FC Westchester’s youngest teams broke out to a fast start to the 2011-12 season over Labor Day weekend, with the 1999 White team winning its division at Yorktown Tournament, the 1999 Blue team reaching the finals at Yorktown in its division and the 2000s getting to the finals at the Oceanside tournament in Long Island.

Five members of the FC Westchester U.S. Soccer Development program are among those selected by ESPN Rise as Top 2012 New York College Prospects. The players are: David Alemany, Cesar Ceja, Alex Kapp, Daniel Norris and Tomas Penfold.
According to ESPN Rise, the list was compiled by the ESPN RISE staff based on recommendations from club and high school coaches and the recruiting status of the players,

FCW U16 Academy Team Clinches Spot in U.S. Soccer Development Academy Playoffs

The FC Westchester U16 Academy team clinched a spot in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy playoffs with a 1-1 tie with Albertson Academy. Depending on the results of games between other divisional opponents Tuesday and next weekend, the team will qualify as the Liberty Division champs or as the second place finishers.
It will be the third consecutive year an FC Westchester U16 U.S. Soccer Development Academy team has qualified for the USSDA playoffs. The playoffs will be held June 24-28 at Pizza Hut Park in Dallas.

According to TopDrawerSoccer.com: What was arguably the biggest game of the weekend across the country, FC Westchester went into New York and blanked second-placed Cosmos Academy East 1-0 on a 70th minute goal from Lucas McBride. The fifth consecutive win earns FCW a little breathing room at the top of the division with three games to play.
It is the second time this month that this FCW team has received Team of the Week honors.
FC Westchester U15 Pre-Academy Team and U17 Premier Team Do Well at Potomac Tournament

The FC Westchester U15 Pre-Academy team, playing up into the U16 age group, reached the semifinals of the Potomac Memorial Day Tournament, missing out on the finals by losing the semis in PKs. Meanwhile, the FCW U17 Premier team reached the finals of the U17 Chesapeake Group.

FC Westchester's Scott Levene has been named the U.S. Soccer Development Academy Player of the Week by U.S. Soccer.
Levene has been a key member of the squad currently in first place in the Liberty Division with a 5-1-0 record. He posted a clean sheet in a 1-0 victory against Albertson on Saturday, making several key saves to earn Player of the Week Honors. He has played in 17 of FC Westchester’s 22 games this season, making 11 starts.

FC Westchester's Gabe Stauber Participates In U18 National Team Camp

FC Westchester’s Gabe Stauber was one of 24 players who participated in the U.S. Under-18 Men’s National Team camp held from April 16-24, on the Nike Campus. The training camp featured a friendlies against the Portland Timbers on April 19 and a pair of friendlies on April 23, against the University of Portland and the University of Washington. The camp was run by U.S. U18 National Team coach Mike Matkovich.

FCW's Alex Kapp Makes Verbal Commitment to Boston College

Alex Kapp, a goalkeeper for the FC Westchester U.S. Soccer Development Academy program, has verbally commited to Boston College, a top collegiate program that plays in the ACC. Kapp, currently a high school junior, has participated in a U17 National Team Camp and traveled with the U17 National Team to Mexico last summer.

FCW's Washington Named to ESPN Rise Fall All-America Team

Taylor Washington, who plays with the FC Westchester U18 U.S. Soccer Development Academy team, has been named to the ESPN Rise Fall All America Team.
According to ESPN Rise: "This year's ESPN RISE Fall All-America selections, 36 in all, feature one player who has signed a professional contract, 33 who are headed to NCAA Division I programs and a pair of U.S. youth national team juniors who remain undecided. Fifteen of the 33 committed players are heading to teams that finished in the NCAA Top 25 men's soccer RPI rankings.
Porras Named First Winner of Lucas Goldbaum Memorial Scholarship

Jorge Porras, who plays with the FC Westchester 1995 U15 Pre-Academy team, was honored Sunday as the first recipient of the Lucas Goldbaum Memorial Scholarship, The award of the scholarship was made at the club’s Annual General Meeting.

FC Westchester's Henry Martin Selected for U14 National Camp

FC Westchester defender Henry Martin has been selected to attend the Under 14 USSF National Camp to be held in Concord, MA. from August 1 to 7th. Martin is one of 120 players nationally who have been invited to the camp.
Martin, who plays on the FCW 1996 team that will be participating this season in the Northeast Pre-Academy League, was selected based on his performance at a U.S. Soccer Development Academy Market Training Center held in June for players in the 1996 and 1997 age groups.

A great goal by Tom McNamara a few minutes into the first overtime gave the FC Westchester ’91 Boys its fourth State Open Cup championship medal as the FCW squad topped defending regional champs East Fishkill 2-1 in the U19 State Cup final played at Peter Collins Soccer Park in Long Island. The four state cup championships are the most by any FC Westchester team, topping the three State Cups won by the ’84 Boys.
Three FCW Player Picked to Play on Development Academy Select Teams at Phoenix Showcase Event

Three members of the FC Westchester U16 U.S. Soccer Development Academy team – Alex Kapp, Ryan McNamara and Taylor Washington -- have been selected to play on Development Academy Select Teams that will play at the upcoming Academy Showcase event being held in early December in Phoenix, Ariz.
Four teams comprised of players born in 1993, three with players born in 1994 and one made up of players born in 1991 and 1992 will play together across the weekend. Development Academy Select Teams are comprised of 130 total players who were chosen by youth national team coaches and U.S. Soccer’s youth national team scouting network. They will have a unique opportunity to play alongside some of the top players in their age while competing against either an Academy club team or another Select Team. Kapp’s team will be coached by U.S. U17 National Team Head Coach Wilmer Cabrera and his staff, while McNamara’s and Washington’s teams will be coached by U18 National Team head coach Mike Matkovich.
The FCW U16 and U18 teams will also be participating at the Showcase event in Phoenix.

FCW's Carillo At U.S. U14 National Camp

FC Westchester’s Gianni Carillo, a member of the club’s U14 Pre-Academy team, is attending the U.S. U-14 Boys National Team Camp being held at the Home Depot Center in Carson, CA. U.S. U-14 Boys’ National Team head coach Manny Schellscheidt is conducting a 36-player training camp from May 2-9, exclusively for players born in 1996.
A total of 26 players --including Carillo -- rejoin Schellscheidt from the team’s trip to Guadalajara in January, with 10 new faces hoping to make an impression on the youth national team coaches. During the week, the U-14s will train daily and play against U-15 club teams from the Southern California area. The ‘96s will come together once more this summer ahead of the annual MegaCamp in August. About half the players at the Home Depot camp are from U.S. Soccer Development Academy clubs.

Sean Kenny, FC Westchester’s Executive Director of Coaching and Player Development for FC Westchester was one of a very select number of coaches who coached at the 2006 adidas Major League Soccer (MLS) Player Combine and worked with MLS coaches and scouts to select players for the 2006 MLS Draft.
Club Founder Al Pastore Elected to Eastern NY Hall of Fame
F.C. Westchester founder Al Pastore has been elected to the Eastern New York Soccer Hall of Fame. Pastore founded F.C. Westchester in 1984. He served as the club’s top administrator and coached several of the club’s teams over the years, taking his teams to national and international prominence. He was twice named USYSA Coach of the Year.
Most recently, Al was an assistant coach at Duke University and serves as the head of the Adidas ESP program.
“Play For Lucas” Columbus Day Tournament Fundraiser Raises Nearly $3,500

FCW's Cabrera Goes to Germany With Super Y League National Team
Brian Cabrera of the FC Westchester ’91 Boys Under 15 team spent 11 days in Germany as part of the Super Y League Under 15 National Select Team, competing against top level German youth teams. The Under 15 Super Y League team played its first International Friendly against Eintracht Frankfurt, then was to compete four friendlies in five days against: Kickers Offenbach, a Bavarian ODP side, SC Freiburg, and Baden ’89 ODP.

FC Westchester '89s Have Successful Trip to England
The FC Westchester Under 17 ’89 Boys returned to the U.S. after spending the winter school break in England, where they had a successful tour, winning two of four games - including a thriller over Premiership youth side Portsmouth -- and leaving top English coaches very impressed.
The tour was set up as part of new working relationship between FC Westchester and Portsmouth, which will include the ability to have FC Westchester send teams and players over to Portsmouth for the Premiership side to take look at players. The relationship also provides for a visit to the United States during the summer by Portsmouth’s Director of Youth Coaching for him to work with the FC Westchester coaches and players.
FCW Alum Richard Martinez Signs Professional Contract

FC Westchester alum Richard Martinez, who played for the FCW ’88 Boys, has signed a contract with the Puerto Rico Islanders of the USSF Division II Professional League. He will play in league's USL Division that in addition to the Islanders includes the Austin Aztecx, the Minnesota Thunder, the Portland Timbers, the Rochester Rhinos and the Tampa Bay Rowdies.
FCW's McNamara Named All-Ivy Honorable Mention As a Freshman

Tom McNamara, a freshman at Brown University who played for the FCW '91 Boys, has been named All-Ivy League honorable mention.
In his first year as a Brown Bruin, McNamara was a huge spark for the NCAA Tournament-bound Brown team, starting in 14 of 16 games. As of the end of the Ivy League regular season, he had scored five goals, all of which were game-winners.
FCW Alum Richard Martinez Named CAA Defensive Player of the Year

Richard Martinez, who played for the FC Westchester '88 Boys team and is a senior at Hofstra University, has been named the 2009 CAA Defensive Player of the Year. He was named to the All-Conference First Team.
Martinez is also a member of the Puerto Rico National Team and played for the team in World Cup qualifying.
FC Westchester Named 29th Best Boys Soccer Club in Country by Soccer America

Soccer America, the country’s leading soccer publication, has come out with its annual rankings of the top 40 soccer clubs in America and FC Westchester has been ranked the 29th best boys club.

"This is a pretty big country and for our club to be named 29th best boys club is a testament to our players, coaches and parents," said Lonny Unger, FCW president, who noted the ranking was based on the fact that in 2009 the club’s U16 and U18 U.S. Soccer Development Academy teams both made it to the Academy playoffs, the club’s U12 and U13 teams both made it to the USYSA regional semi-finals and the club has three State Cup finalists (U12s, U13s and U15s).
"We try very, very hard to do everything we can to get it right and its nice to see the club getting some credit for the effort expended by all involved," said David McCollum, the club’s Director of Coaching.

FC Westchester and the U.S. Soccer Development Academy
F.C. Westchester is among a select number of clubs that have been chosen by the US Soccer Federation to be a U.S. Soccer’s Development Academy program, a revolutionary initiative that started in 2007-08. The program is designed to extend the Federation’s National Team program, putting an emphasis on the development of the player by improving their daily environment.

FCW's Altchek To Be Honored by Jewish Hall of Fame
Charles Altchek, a senior striker at Harvard who played for the FC Westchester ’85 Boys will be awarded the Marty Glickman outstanding Jewish scholastic athlete of the year at the upcoming induction ceremony at the Jewish Hall of Fame. Also receiving the Glickman Award will be North Carolina sophomore midfielder Yael Averbuch of Montclair, N.J.
FC Westchester Wins Two State Cup Titles
'96 Boys and '97 Move Onto Regionals in West Virginia
Two FC Westchester teams -- the U12 ’97 Boys and the U13 ’96 Boys -- have captured US Youth Soccer Eastern New York Championship Cup titles, with the ’97s topping the Manhattan Kickers in a penalty shootout and the ’96s beating HBC of Long Island 3-2.
FCW's Jacobson Ranked Second in Country in SPARQ Test
FC Westchester’s Brad Jacobson has again proven to be one of the top athletes nationally in the entire U.S. Soccer Development Academy program. Jacobson, of the FCW U18 Academy team, is ranked second in the U17/18 age group in the SPARQ test amongst nearly 2000 players in the Academy system. Last year, he finished first in the nation. '94s, U16 and U18 Academy Teams Show Teamwork in Cleaning Field for Winter Practice

The FC Westchester ’94 Boys and the U16 and U18 Academy teams got together Saturday and working as one big team of players and parents cleared most of the SUNY Turf field of snow, allowing for future practices.
"It was a great team bonding experience and it also was very necessary as the field is needed to get the teams ready for games that are coming up very quickly," said FCW President Lonny Unger and Director of Coaching David McCollum, who were also on hand to help shovel. "We both would like to thank all of the players and parents who chipped in!"

FC Westchester's Sean Kenny To Be Inducted Into Keene State College Hall of Fame

Keene, NH -- FC Westchester's Sean Kenny will be inducted this coming weekend into the Keene State College Hall of Fame.
Kenny, who currently serves as the club's Director of Youth Development and has served as the club's DOC, has coached several FC Westchester teams over the years to state cup championships and coached the team's '84 boys team to the 2000 USYSA U116 national championship.
According to a Keene State spokesman, Kenny, originally from Dublin, Ireland, and now living in Mount Vernon, N.Y., "is recognized as one of the top midfielders to don a red and white Owl uniform." While at Keene State, "Kenny was a two-time All-American and All-New England player whose hard-nosed play and leadership set an example for his teammates and drew respect from his opponents. As a junior, he led Keene State to its first NCAA Division II tournament appearance."
The induction ceremony and dinner will take place this Saturday, January 24, at 6:45 p.m. at the Lloyd P. Young Student Center on the campus of Keene State.
FC Westchester's Schramm Selected in MLS Draft
Ricky Schramm, who starred for several years for the FC Westchester ’86 Boys and then was a four-year starter at Georgetown, was selected in the third round and 37th overall by D.C. United in the Major League Soccer (MLS) SuperDraft held January 12th in Indianapolis.
FCW's Altchek Participates in Pre-Draft MLS Combine
Charles Altchek -- who played with the FC Westchester ’85 Boys and then moved onto Harvard where he’s been a two-time Ivy League Player of the Year selection -- was one of 58 college seniors from 44 Division I schools who took part in the 2007 adidas MLS Player Combine. The annual player combine took place Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. in January of 2007.
The coaching staffs and general managers from all 13 MLS teams were in attendance to scout talent at the 2007 adidas MLS Player Combine, which concluded four days before the 2007 MLS SuperDraft.
Seven FCW Alums In NCAA Division 1 Championship Tournament
Having an FC Westchester background must also mean a player carries a rabbit foot in their pocket in college.
That’s because seven FC Westchester players participated in the 2006 NCAA Division 1 Men’s Soccer Championship Tournament.
